Teeth Whitening

Natural tooth structure is susceptible to discolorations.

Darkening of tooth structure is a very normal and natural process and most of us will find that our teeth are not as bright and white in our 30′s as they were when we were teenagers.

These days however most of us are not content with yellowing and dull teeth.

This is where professional tooth whitening can definitely help.

There are two main ways your dentist can help you whiten your teeth.

This is done in most cases in 1.5 to 2 hour appointment and the result can be seen immediately.
Your dentist will first apply a protective resin layer to your gums, as the whitening gels used in inchair whitening tend to be of much higher concentrations than home whitening gels and may cause chemical burns to the gums.

Then the special gel is applied to your teeth.
A special activating light may be used in some cases with certain bleaching systems.

Your dentist will first manufacture special custom fitted soft plastic trays.
Then you will be shown how to load the trays with whitening gel correctly, and you apply the treatment at home yourself as per instructions for a few days to a few weeks, depending on the initial color and the desired result.

The success of both whitening systems is very good and the results are comparable.
The inchair systems tend to be significantly more expensive than home whitening systems.

Tooth whitening is one of the safest treatments we offer in contemporary dentistry.
However, both systems are likely to cause some transient tooth sensitivity.
Some patients will barely notice changes in their tooth sensitivity, other patients may find it quite disturbing.

Your dentist will advise you on most appropriate way to combat the symptoms of your tooth sensitivity.
